Can Microdermabrasion Remove Stretch Marks
Some spa professionals and estheticians have suggested that microdermabrasion stretch marks may be effective in removing the unsightly blemishes. But is this true? Is microdermabrasion really an effective treatment for stretch marks? To answer this question we must first understand what is stretch marks and microdermabrasion. What are Stretch Marks? Stretch marks appear as striations across the skin. They are caused by scarring within the skin's middle layer during periods of weight gain where the skin elasticity is over-stretched. A major contributing factor in the formation of stretch marks is the level of glucocorticoids in the blood. Glucocorticoids are a type of hormones. When present in high levels, glucocorticoids prevent cells called fibroblasts from forming collagen and elastin fibers-the structural proteins that are vital for skin elasticity. Glucocorticoid levels peaks during pregnancy and puberty, which also correspond to periods of rapid weight gain. So it is during these two stages of life that stretch marks usually form. Can Microdermabrasion Help? Microdermabrasion is a mild, non-surgical procedure in which the skin is exfoliated by spraying the surface with tiny abrasive micro crystals, usually of aluminum oxide. This encourages fresh skin to grow, resulting in a more even skin tone and smoother skin texture. Microdermabrasion is very effective in removing fine lines, irregular pigmentation, and other surface skin blemishes. However, the process only addresses the top surface of the skin, mainly the dead skin cells in the stratum corneum-the outermost layer of skin. So can microdermabrasion be used for treating stretch marks? There are many estheticians who believe that the use of microdermabrasion for treating stretch marks because they say that the process also increases the production of collagen within the skin. However, there is little evidence to support this. Researchers have not found any link between increased collagen production and the administering of microdermabrasion procedure in clinical studies. So this issue is still being hotly debated. Based on existing evidence, it is probably not true, then, that microdermabrasion for stretch marks is effective. Alternate treatments to Microdermabrasion Treatment for Stretch Marks Dermabrasion, another skincare procedure that involves sanding not only surface skin cells but the deeper levels as well, would be much more effective for treating stretch marks than microdermabrasion. This procedure is more expensive than microdermabrasion with a longer recovery period and must also be performed by a doctor, but the results are far superior to microdermabrasion for stretch mark removal. Another technique, which is gaining popularity as a stretch mark treatment is fractional laser resurfacing. This procedure increases the production of epithelial collagen by carefully directing laser at the stretch mark damaged area. In clinical trials, up to 75% of patients noticed marked improvement after several sessions of fractional laser resurfacing. If the stretch marks are very pronounced as in the abdominal region induced by pregnancy, some patients have opted for a tummy tuck, whereby the affected area of the skin is removed altogether. So, there are many alternate treatments available to microdermabrasion for stretch marks and they are more effective.
