The Danger of Inconsistencies in Microdermabrasion Training Requirements

Currently, it is up to individual state to set their own regulations regarding microdermabrasion training requirement and the conduct of the procedure. There are concerns that inadequate training may lead to botch microdermabrasion treatments. It is also possible for viral infections to be spread through the use of recycled abrading material.

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure developed in Italy in 1985. It has been heralded as a revolutionary skincare technique that is able to revitalize the face. During this procedure, a microdermabrasion machine sprays a jet of tiny crystals of abrading material, usually aluminum oxide, onto the face. The crystals exfoliate dead skin cells, remove impurities and are then vacuumed away. The face is then left with fresh glowing skin.

State Requirements for Microdermabrasion Training Requirement and Administration

In the State of South Carolina, microdermabrasion can only perform a professional trained under the supervision of a doctor. In California, however, anyone can be certified after 12 hours of training. The State of Colorado, where microdermabrasion is very popular, mandates14 hours of microdermabrasion training at a vocational school. In Florida, non-medical professionals can only perform microdermabrasion procedure on the head, neck and scalp. There are some states with no regulations at all. Hence, it is up to the businesses and manufacturers of microdermabrasion machines to train the technicians themselves. Microdermabrasion when not performed properly can lead to serious skin problem and injury. In places where the microdermabrasion training requirements are less stringent, this is a very likely possibility.

Even in States where legal regulations do exist, the microdermabrasion training and course requirements vary widely such that it is difficult to assess how well a technician is trained. Recognized organizations of estheticians, such as the National Coalition of Esthetician and Related Associations (NCEA) have long stated a desire to implement a unified standard of microdermabrasion training and practice. However, given the current state of affair, this could be a long and difficult process. Until microdermabrasion training becomes better-regulated uniform, it would be wise for the individual consumers to do their research well before going for the procedure.

Future Microdermabrasion Treatment and Training

As the demand for better skin care products and treatments such as microdermabrasion increases, the technology will inevitably improve. This means that future microdermabrasion treatment may be made better, safer and simpler. Some experts believe that the future of microdermabrasion will involve a combination of other methods used together with microdermabrasion treatment to achieve a better and longer lasting effect. It is also likely that the need for commercial exfoliating creams may become unnecessary in the future. The need for microdermabrasion training and administration may be different in the future.
